Germany remains the ‘world travel champion’ as the worldwide number one outbound market for international tourism, followed by the USA and the UK. The travel frequency in Germany has been stable for years and is impressive: According to the DRV Deutscher Reiseverband, in 2015, as much as 77.1 percent of Germans made a holiday journey of at least five days.

So, ever wondered what’s a holiday heaven for German people? It is a Mediterranean country like Italy, who has announced that it is expecting a golden summer, with visitors coming along in considerably larger numbers.

Looking in detail at international fluxes in Italy, Germany is by far the Italian main market with 6.2 million arrivals and 34.7 million presences during the summer, followed by the United States (2.4 million arrivals and 5.9 million presences) and by France (almost 2 million arrivals and 6.8 million presences).

According to Federalberghi, the Italian Associations for Tourism and Hotels, the favourite locations in Italy are: the sea, the lakes and mountains for the Germans, the thermal baths and major and minor art cities for the Austrians, French and the British. The major and minor art cities as well as internal areas are the favourite locations for Americans and the business/shopping cities and the sea for the Russians.
