Two major events expected to deliver $11 million to the economy have been secured for New Zealand’s new convention centre.
“New Zealand put together an impressive bid, competing against other countries for the conferences to be held in Auckland,” says Lisa Gardiner Manager Business Events, Tourism New Zealand.
Tourism New Zealand worked in partnership with the Auckland Convention Bureau and the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) on the bids.
Tourism New Zealand works with groups across the country to encourage and support them to bring conferences to New Zealand. The estimated value of all conferences bid for in the last financial year was an impressive $96.3 million.

The two large-scale international medical conferences in will be held at the under construction NZICC in 2020.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) will hold back-to-back conferences at the NZICC over five days.
The 35th APAO Congress will be the biggest medical meeting to ever be held in New Zealand, attracting an estimated 4,000 medical professionals and researchers from around the world.
This will be followed by the IAPB 11th General Assembly, where 2,000 eye care providers, International Non-Governmental Organisations, UN bodies and others involved in the fight against blindness and visual impairment will meet.
Brett O’Riley, Chief Executive of ATEED says securing international conferences of this scale and prestige demonstrates that Auckland is a world-class business events destination.
“The development of NZICC has meant Auckland is now able to compete internationally for these larger scale conference and association meetings,” he says.

Tourism New Zealand offers strategic marketing and bid assistance to internationally-affiliated organisations seeking to host a conference of more than 200 international delegates in New Zealand. Assistance includes providing a financial feasibility study of the conference, bid presentation costs, international travel assistance, preparing professional documents and presentations to set bids apart and marketing strategies to improve an organisation’s chance of winning a bid.
