The European Commission awarded Milan with the 2016 Access City Award on the occasion of the European Day for People With Disabilities.
The award ceremony took place during the European Day of Persons with Disabilities 2015 Conference, held in Brussels from 7 to 8 December and it aimed to reward cities for their efforts to be accessible to all. The conference focused on children and young people with disabilities in Europe. It also treated the subject of inclusive education and equal participation in work and society of persons with disabilities on a national and EU level.
Milan has supported accessibility and usability, and it has long term plans for the future as well. The Italian city also promotes Universal Design standards, which aim to design products and spaces that can be used by a large majority of people.
