The GSMA Mobile World Congress 2015 surpassed all expectations and had a record-breaking +93,000 attendees from 200 countries. Last year, the event welcomed around 85,000 participants – the highest number in the history of the congress. These numbers mark an all-time high for the world main mobile congress and are set to confirm us there is big interest and business development going on in the mobile sector.
The GSMA Mobile World Congress was held in Cannes (France) until 2006, when Barcelona hosted it for the first time. In 2011, Barcelona was elected as the Mobile World Capital of the world and signed a collaboration contract that will keep the event there until 2018.
Barcelona is a great city for such events for many reasons. In our opinion, its early adopting of best practices in the field of renewable energies and smart cities plays an important role.
Recently, the city has been awarded as the European Capital of Innovation by the European Commission, and is doing very well in the global rankings. Bicing, a bike-sharing system with 6,000 bikes and 420 stations, road paint that absorbs contamination, pay-as-you-go apps for street parking and intelligent street lightning systems are only a few examples of why Barcelona is a Smart City and encouraging others to shift towards this direction.
