IMEX Group – Taking leadership in sustainable development in the meetings industry

“We do our part to leave the world a better place than we found it. We are committed not only to implementing best practice in event sustainability ourselves but also to using our influence to encourage everyone in our industry to maximise their efforts.”

says Carina Bauer, CEO, IMEX Group and encourages and sets the tone for the meetings industry to switch to sustainable practise.

IMEX’s Sustainable Stratgegy includes

  • to inspire action: examples to be found in the Sustainable Exhibiting Guide, the refill movement and donations
  • to engage suppliers (but not only! event planners can use all of these tips as well!): by using recyclable materials, providing locally sourced food items, chose compostable packaging

The Motto is what we all should apply in daily life and that of any circular economy: REUSE – REDUCE – RECYCLE

Sustainable exhibition/events and sustainable give-aways

In 2019, IMEX introduced a Sustainable Exhibiting Pledge to exhibitors at IMEX in Frankfurt and IMEX America shows. The idea behind it is to encourage  exhibitors to consider their impact on the environment when they take part in trade shows. They are asked to commit to three green actions to minimise their impact at the show. For example, they might commit to reducing all single-use plastics and paper, using public transport to reach the halls or offering sustainable gifts/ giveaways. At any event with a product presentation, there are usually an abundance of things straining after a (usually very short) effect and of absolut no use except to leave them in the hotel room or throw them away at home. They cost money, resources and ad to the clutter. When planning give-aways, do so with consideration of their ecological impact and of their practicability.

In this IMEX blog article is a list of possible sustainable give-aways

Anti-idling action plan for your stand suppliers or any outsourced support for your events

One of the biggest myths around idling is that it’s more efficient to leave a car engine running for a few minutes than to shut it off and turn it back on again. The truth is that with modern fuel-injection technology, starting a car requires almost no fuel. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers estimates that the amount of fuel required to restart a car is the same amount used in just 6 seconds of idling. So why not make this a condition for suppliers who work with you that they not idle when delivering your constructions or catering? More on the website of cleanair.org
